Georgia Southern Botanical Garden received its third grant from the Georgia Forestry Commission to continue work on Tree Smarts. The Garden's new program, Tree Smarts III, includes a certified arborist program, establishing a county tree board, and conducting a sample tree survey. Keep Bulloch Beautiful is also a partner in this grant. Tree Smarts II brought together the Garden, Keep Bulloch Beautiful, the Bulloch Council of Garden Clubs and the Statesboro Regional Library for educational outreach. Components of the grant included funding to develop an outdoor classroom and coordinating teacher curriculum at Brooklet Elementary School, working with Boys & Girls Club volunteers to become Junior Tree Keepers for the city's new linear park, helping Bulloch County develop a tree ordinance and coordinating a city-wide Arbor Day Celebration. The grant is funded by the Urban and Community Forestry Financial Assistance Program and administered by the Georgia Forestry Commission. The first Tree Smarts grant was a comprehensive public outreach education program designed to educate elected officials, developers, county maintenance staff, teachers, homeowners and the community about the use of native trees. Georgia Southern Botanical Garden and three community partners, Bulloch Council of Garden Clubs, Keep Bulloch Beautiful and Statesboro Regional Library, launched the program. Funds for the project were provided by the Urban and Community Forestry Financial Assistance Program administered by the Georgia Forestry Commission.
